Berlin Street Art

Visiting Berlin is still one of my fondest memories of last year. My boyfriend and I, completely fell in love with the city, its people and culture. One of my favourite things about the city, wherever you look, you are surrounded by Art. Whether its sculpture, architecture or graffiti.

Graffiti or ‘street art’ is something I have always loved, you only need to spend 10 minutes walking round the Northern Quarter in Manchester and you will find some of the best street art in England. On our first day in Berlin, it didn’t take long for me to notice its stunning graffiti culture. This city not only seems to encourage its street artists, but celebrates the work they create.

The main place to view graffiti / street art in Berlin, is the East Side Gallery. This is where the Berlin wall still stands along the river Spree. In the nineties, street artists were encouraged, to create artwork on the remaining section of the wall. Most of the artwork, is a celebration of freedom & almost every piece has a political message.

The gallery is stunning & is filled with well-known/ iconic pieces of graffiti. Walking along the wall, is a great way to spend a couple of hours. But while your in Berlin, you will see street art wherever go and most of it, is just as good as those in the West Side Gallery.

Berlin is a city connected by trams & trains. While you use the public transport, don’t forget to look around. Some of the best street art we saw in Berlin, were hidden in the arches of the railway stations.

So next time your on a city break, make sure you take a second to look around at the street art. It is often overlooked, and Europe has some of the best there is to offer!
